No Man's Sky The Gek
Traders first, empire in the plaques — standing, gifts, and First Spawn history.
The Gek are the galaxy’s sales department with a war crime in the attic. On a space station they bob, they haggle, they offer you a shuttle you do not need. On planetary plaques they still shout First Spawn slogans about bending galaxies over a spawning pool. Both versions are canon. Hello Games has been telling that split since the 12 August 2016 launch, and Cosmos 7.0 (9 September 2026) made Gek standing useful again when you want to claim work in a trade system.
This page is the Gek half of the factions hub. It links on purpose to the Korvax they once tried to erase, the Vy’keen who remember the war, and the Autophage who camp in Gek stars whether the merchants notice or not.
Who they are in play
Gek-controlled systems lean toward commerce: busy stations, trade terminals that actually stock what a new Traveller wants, and mission boards that pay in units more often than in honour. Starship technology is their flavour of vendor. If you are hunting a first Solar or shopping a cabinet before you understand Multi-Tools, a Gek station is a kinder classroom than a Vy’keen armoury.
They look amphibious, speak in first-person profit, and will teach you words for a handful of carbon. Learn those words. A polite Gek with a gift slot is plus-one standing. A confused Gek who thinks you threatened the spawning syrup is how early saves accidentally go negative.
First Spawn, without the brochure
Lore plaques — Script of the Gek, plus the nastier First Spawn stones — describe an empire that called itself master of galaxies. They hurled dissenters from spawning pools. They glassed Korvax Prime for ore and for the sin of not kneeling. The Vy’keen crusade against Sentinels nearly worked until Gek barbarism, in Korvax telling, pulled the machines back into the story.
Modern Gek are not that poster. Many are embarrassed, mercantile, and small. The game lets you meet both voices: the station trader who wants a Gek Charm, and the monument that still says DESPAIR. High standing does not rewrite the plaques. It just means the trader will sell to you while you read them.
Standing and gifts
Gek standing moves the same way as the other classic races:
- Mission Agent jobs that name the Gek in Gek systems.
- Gifts: Gek Relic and Gek Charm are the curios you actually hand over. NipNip and related produce show up in their culture; they are not a substitute for relics at a stranger’s feet.
- Correct choices at manufacturing facilities, operations centres, and monoliths. Gek puzzles often reward commerce, caution, and not choosing “destroy” like a Vy’keen.
- Pirate kills and freighter rescues in Gek space.
Ranks run from insulted customer up through partner-flavoured titles as the number climbs. Exact rank names have been expanded across updates; the gameplay effect is stable. Better dialogue, access to higher mission ranks, allied ships when pirates jump you, and — after Cosmos — an easier time looking like a legitimate operator in a Gek-held station you want to work.
Do not dump Vy’keen Daggers on a Gek envoy and expect applause. Race-specific means race-specific. Stack relics while you explore; they are light, valuable, and faster than twenty scan missions when you are one gift from the next title.
Why Gek space is good for new saves
Early Getting Started advice is economic: scan, scrap, warp. Gek economies make that loop less painful. Outlaw systems — often a good hunt for Solar starships — still overlap with Gek language and trade goods even when the law is optional. Buy what you need, scrap Interceptors, and leave. You do not owe the First Spawn a memorial tour on day one.
Gek also hire well as base staff when you want agriculture and trade terminals. That is a base-building decision, not a moral one. If your story brain wants the Korvax scientist and the Vy’keen armourer anyway, you can mix the three. Standing is per species, not a single alignment bar.
Gek, Cosmos, and everyone else
Cosmos salvage does not care who designed the station lobby, but contracts and station politics do. If you plan to direct a station in a Gek star, raise Gek standing and the matching guild ranks (Merchants especially) instead of assuming a Tractor Beam is a personality. Online co-op, cross-play, and Cross-Save all apply when friends land in your market. Friends join over the network.
Autophage camps still hide on Gek worlds after They Who Returned. Purple-class stars from In Stellar Multitudes are not “Gek content,” but you will fly through Gek space to get the story done. Treat merchants as infrastructure. Treat plaques as history. The Atlas will not take a Gek Charm, and Travellers are not a subspecies of frog.
If you remember one Gek lesson, make it this: pay them, gift them, and read the stones later. A Traveller who tries to role-play First Spawn at the mission board will farm negative standing and worse prices. A Traveller who farms relics, buys the Solar, and keeps the plaques in the catalogue will fund expeditions, Corvettes, and purple-system quartzite without pretending the empire never happened.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.
What gifts raise Gek standing?
Gek Relics and Gek Charms handed to Gek NPCs. Mission boards, pirate hunts in Gek systems, and correct monolith choices also move the number.
Who were the First Spawn?
An ancient Gek empire that enslaved and nearly destroyed the Korvax, including the fall of Korvax Prime. Modern Gek traders are not a free pass on that history.
Are Gek systems best for beginners?
Often yes. Trade stock and ship hunting are friendlier than jumping straight into Vy'keen war economies. You can still raise all factions on one save.
Do Gek care about Autophage camps?
Not as a standing board. Autophage camps can spawn in Gek systems once you can see them. Their reputation is separate; see the Autophage page.
Does Cosmos station claiming need Gek standing?
If the star is Gek-held, yes — local species standing plus guild ranks matter. A Corvette Tractor Beam does not replace that grind.
Can I raise Gek standing without speaking the language?
Yes, gifts and mission boards still work, but wrong monolith answers hurt you. Learn a few Gek words at stations so commerce options are obvious.
