No Man's Sky Patch History
The 2016 launch, the comeback, and every named update that led to Cosmos.
No Man’s Sky launched on 12 August 2016 as a vast, lonely survival sandbox and immediately became a cautionary tale. The universe was huge. The promises about multiplayer, variety, and late-game purpose were not. Hello Games did not ship a paid expansion to paper over it. They kept the servers on and spent ten years releasing forty-plus free named updates with no DLC fee and no microtransactions.
This page is the comeback narrative Expedition 23 asks you to walk. You do not need every hotfix number. You need the named steps, what they added, and which wiki page to open if that mechanic is why you came back.
Launch and the long repair
The 1.0 galaxy had procedural planets, a crash-site tutorial, trading, and a centre to chase. Base building, vehicles, and a real story arrived later as Foundation, Pathfinder, and Atlas Rises. Those early patches matter historically; they are not how the game plays in 2026. If you are new, skip nostalgia and use Getting Started.
NEXT (2018) is the first name most returning players should remember. Full multiplayer, third-person, bases on more surfaces, Xbox, a visual overhaul. The game people rage-quit in 2016 is not the game NEXT left behind.
Beyond (2019) added VR, the Space Anomaly as a social hub, and the modern research trees. Living Ship, Exo Mech, Crossplay, and Desolation filled the next year with organic ships, Minotaur work, platform play, and derelict freighters. By the time Origins (2020) rewrote planet variety, Hello Games had already done more free work than most paid sequels.
Expeditions, Endurance, Waypoint
Expeditions (2021) invented the seasonal save: a shared starting planet, milestone lists, exclusive ships and companions, then a copy-out to your main file. That template still runs Expedition 23. Frontiers put you in charge of settlements. Sentinel and Outlaws split the combat fantasy into corrupted machines and pirate-system crime.
Endurance rebuilt freighter interiors and fleets. Waypoint (2022) launched on Nintendo Switch, reworked inventories, and added adjustable difficulty so a relaxed save and a permadeath save could share the same universe rules with different sliders.
Fractal through Echoes
Fractal brought PSVR2 and the Wonders catalogue. Interceptor added dissonant worlds and stealable Sentinel ships — still a tier-list talking point. Echoes introduced the Autophage as a playable culture with their own language, staff multi-tools, and purple-tinted story beats that Worlds Part II later spent.
You do not need to replay every story chain on a Cosmos save, but Autophage standing still gates staffs and some settlement flavour. The factions hub covers Gek, Korvax, Vy’keen, and Autophage without spoiling the Atlas Path.
Worlds, Relics, Beacon, Voyagers, Breach
Worlds Part I (2024) rebuilt water, clouds, and planetary spectacle. Worlds Part II (~January 2025) added purple star systems, gas giants, water worlds, and the Atlantid Drive story. Lithium and quartzite live there; see resources before you hunt a paradise moon around a giant.
Relics turned bones into a paleontology loop. Beacon landed with Switch 2 and deepened settlement management. Voyagers (August 2025) is update 6.0: Corvette-class custom ships, interiors, multi-crew, the workshop, and Expedition 19. Breach followed with more corvette parts and wrecked hulls to strip in a darker seasonal tone.
That 2025 run is why Cosmos feels like a conclusion rather than a random feature dump. You already had a walkable ship and wrecks to scrape. Space itself was still a hallway.
Remnant, Swarm, Cosmos
Remnant launched 11 February 2026 with the Gravitino Coil — a gravity gun for the multi-tool. Industrial salvage, hauling, and physics toys. Cosmos uses that gun on space hulks and infested outposts. If you skipped Remnant, install the Coil before you spacewalk a derelict.
Swarm (2026) pushed large-scale space combat: agile swarmers, a Hive of Glass, and a community-built Prismatic Core. It is the combat chapter sitting next to Cosmos’s exploration chapter.
Cosmos 7.0 went live 9 September 2026. Star system map, hulks, outposts, bio-wrecks, asteroid belts, orbital bases, ownable stations, alliances, a reachable star, and Expedition 23. Patch 7.01 (Steam 10 September 2026, other platforms rolling) fixes station decoration, tractor Vent Cargo, hulk rare-loot sharing, Claim Station races, and star-map revisit markers. Read the dedicated Cosmos page, then the how-tos for space stations and space hulks. That is current.
How to use this timeline in-game
Expedition 23, Our Journey Continues, treats each milestone as one of those 40 updates, with Sean Murray commentary filed in the Catalogue. You are not expected to remember patch numbers. You are expected to recognise names: NEXT when multiplayer appears, Echoes when Autophage show up, Voyagers when a corvette bay opens, Cosmos when the Quick Menu grows a star map.
Practical advice for a 2016 veteran:
- Start a new save or a fresh expedition. Old muscle memory about inventory sizes and base limits will lie to you.
- Learn controls again. Binding screens and Quick Menu pages have moved more than once.
- Fly a normal ship until you can warp, then build a corvette.
- Only then open the Cosmos map and take a hulk contract.
Official notes stay on nomanssky.com. This wiki will not mirror every 7.0x hotfix. We will update Cosmos and Voyagers when a patch changes how you play, not when it fixes a decal.
The moral is not “the launch was fine.” It was not. The moral is that the same small studio spent a decade refusing to abandon the galaxy, and Cosmos is the first time space is as authored as the planets. If you bounced in 2016, the Updates Hub is the honest re-entry point — then go play, because another free named update will move the goalposts again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.
How many free updates does No Man's Sky have?
Hello Games has shipped 40-plus named updates since the 12 August 2016 launch. None of them are paid DLC. Cosmos 7.0 (9 September 2026) is the current landmark.
What was the first update that really changed the game?
Most returning players point at NEXT (2018): full multiplayer, third-person, and a visual overhaul. Beyond (VR and the Anomaly) and Origins (planet variety) are the other early turning points.
When did corvettes and the gravity gun arrive?
Voyagers 6.0 added corvettes in August 2025. Remnant added the Gravitino Coil on 11 February 2026. Cosmos uses both for space hulks.
Do I need to replay old story updates?
No. A current save already contains those systems. Follow Getting Started, then Artemis or Autophage threads only if you want glyphs, staffs, or purple-system access.
Is there a paid season pass?
No. Expeditions, corvettes, stations, and Cosmos content download as free title updates. Buy the game on a platform you own; patches are included.
