No Man's Sky The Autophage

Hidden machine-echoes, staffs, and the purple stars that Worlds Part II restored.

The Autophage Faction

The Autophage are the fourth people, and they were never on the original standing poster. They are robotic shells grown around Korvax Echoes that fell off the Convergence, found Atlantideum leaking from dissonant worlds, and built camps you cannot see until the story says you can. Echoes / Worlds Part II made them playable politics. In Stellar Multitudes then handed Travellers the Atlantid Drive and a galaxy map suddenly full of purple-class stars, gas giants, and water worlds.

This page completes the set with Gek, Korvax, and Vy’keen. Read those first if you still think “faction” only means a space-station species with a gift inventory. Autophage standing is camp work. Their loot is staffs, scan tech, and a colour of star that did not exist on your map yesterday.

Who they are

Autophage do not consider themselves Korvax anymore, which is the point. They assemble bodies in mismatched parts, cloak tents around drop pods and ruins, and speak like people who remember being deleted. You meet fragments at harmonic scrap near crashed Interceptors, at harmonic camps, and randomly on dissonant planets long before the faction board exists. The Polyphonic Core is what turns those rumours into a scanner ping.

They live in other people’s systems. There is no “Autophage empire” occupying a third of Euclid. A Gek trader can stand ten metres from a cloaked camp and sell you GekNip as if the machines were weather.

Story gates (They Who Returned → In Stellar Multitudes)

Exact mission names have patches sitting on them, but the spine is stable:

  1. Progress the main Traveller / Artemis path far enough (The Purge sits on the critical path for many saves).
  2. Walk the Atlas Path to Atlas Eternal — the Atlas is still not a gift faction, but this questline wants it done.
  3. Own a settlement, survive its Sentinel attack, and complete A Trace of Metal when it appears.
  4. Open a harmonic camp on a dissonant world (inverted mirrors, dissonance resonators, camp puzzles).
  5. Warp in a starship until They Who Returned begins. Complete Audience with the Autophage and Prayers of the Machine. Install the Polyphonic Core, visit camps, spend Atlantideum, and report back.
  6. Pulse until In Stellar Multitudes starts. You help restore a purple star from deletion, earn the Atlantid Drive, and watch the map populate with X/Y-class suns that were always missing.

Skip a gate and the pulse event simply never happens. Warping in a freighter can refuse to start They Who Returned; use a starship. Settlement ownership is a real requirement, not flavour. Details shift — check updates if a patch reorders a beat — but nobody is handing you purple stars from a Gek mission board.

Staffs, standing, and camps

Voltaic Staffs are the Autophage Multi-Tool: high damage, assembled from head, core, and pole at Autophage synthesis terminals or harmonic interfaces. Class can roll badly. Slots can spawn damaged. Reroll parts. Do not declare the first staff S-tier because it is tall. Combat ranking versus Sentinel tools lives on the Multi-Tool list.

Standing with Autophage comes from talking to camp members and running their local jobs, not from dumping Korvax Cubes on a cloaked priest. Atlantideum is fuel for the Polyphonic Core and related tech. Keep a stack. Purple systems add Quartzite and Activated Quartzite; that is the mining reason to finish the story even if you never liked staffs.

Camps reuse ordinary planetary POIs — drop pods, plaques, crashed freighters — with extra tents. Once the faction is visible, they appear in Gek, Korvax, and Vy’keen space alike. Portal glyphs are how you come back to a camp whose staff parts you liked.

Purple stars, gas giants, water worlds

Worlds Part II’s headline geography is gated here. Purple-class systems stay off the galactic map until In Stellar Multitudes completes (except the one you midwife during the quest). They can look like blue stars if you squint. They are not blue stars. Bring the Atlantid Drive or you are sightseeing from the wrong side of a lock.

Gas giants and deep water worlds are exploration content, not a new standing board. They change which resources you scan, which companions you hatch, and whether your Corvette is a boat, a station tender, or a storm shelter. Cosmos 7.0 then layered salvage on top of that sky. A Tractor Beam does not replace the Atlantid Drive. You want both if you are still playing in 2026.

Atlas, Travellers, and the other three

Autophage story is tangled with Atlas interfaces and with Korvax guilt. It still does not turn Atlas into a reputation bar. Travellers remain a separate mysterious people — you included — walking into someone else’s resurrection.

You can be a Gek partner, Korvax singularity, Vy’keen templar, and Autophage friend on one save. Online co-op lets a friend who already finished In Stellar Multitudes show you a purple system; your own drive still matters for independent warps. Cross-play and Cross-Save apply. Friends join over the network.

The Autophage are the faction you unlock, not the faction you buy a shuttle from. Finish the camps, take the staff if the roll is honest, and treat purple stars as the real end of the standing tutorial. Everything before that — relics, cubes, daggers — was how the three empires taught you to be useful. This is how the hidden fourth teaches you that the map was lying.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.

How do I start the Autophage questline?

Progress the main story through The Purge, finish the Atlas Path, complete A Trace of Metal from a settlement, open a harmonic camp, then warp in a starship until They Who Returned triggers.

What is In Stellar Multitudes?

The Worlds Part II follow-up that restores purple-class stars and grants the Atlantid Drive. It starts after They Who Returned, usually as a pulse-drive encounter.

Are Autophage the same as Korvax?

No. They began as disconnected Korvax Echoes rebuilt with Atlantideum. In play they have separate camps, staffs, and standing. See also Korvax.

How do I get a Voltaic Staff?

After Autophage access, assemble a head, core, and pole at a camp synthesis terminal. Class and damaged slots are random — reroll parts instead of keeping a bad C-class.

Can I reach purple systems without the story?

Not in normal play, aside from the single system you create during the quest. The rest of the purple map waits on the Atlantid Drive.

Do Gek relics raise Autophage standing?

No. Use camp missions and Autophage dialogue. Relics, cubes, and daggers still belong to Gek, Korvax, and Vy'keen.
