Cosmos Update

Cosmos is update 7.0, live 9 September 2026. Hello Games calls it a complete overhaul of space after ten years of patches that mostly improved planets. The patch is free on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, Switch 1, Switch 2, Mac, PSVR 1 and 2, PC VR, and Game Pass. Official notes: nomanssky.com/cosmos-update.

If you only remember space as an empty pulse between a station and a planet, throw that out. Systems now have fixed, re-visitable points of interest: rocky and icy asteroid belts, inhabited outposts, infested bio-wrecks, hulks, debris fields, asteroid platforms, and the star itself. You plot them on a new star system map instead of hoping the pulse drive pings something.

Star system map

Open it from the Quick Menu once a save has reached the Space Anomaly. The map shows celestial bodies, the space station, deep-space POIs, and unidentified signals. Mark a planet or a wreck and the ship helps you fly there. A short tutorial mission called Signals teaches the loop.

Points of interest stay put. That matters for alliances and for builders who want a truck-stop in the same belt every session. After hotfix 7.01, some completed objects can remain on the map so you can go back.

Hubristic Travellers can fly to the system’s star. It is a real destination. It is also lethal. Treat it as a story beat, not a farming route.

Space hulks and the salvage loop

Space hulks are colossal derelicts: rusted chambers, narrow chokepoints, cargo and tech in the skeleton. You spacewalk the wreck. The Gravitino Coil (the gravity gun from Remnant) pulls chunks free. A Tractor Beam on a corvette sucks those chunks into the hold. Scan first. The highest-value pieces should come off before the hull complains.

Over-harvest and the wreck melts down and explodes. Structural integrity is the timer. Greedy shipbreaking is a fireworks show you do not walk away from. Haul salvage to a space outpost for processing, then sell on the Galactic Trade Network or keep pieces for station decoration.

Corvette beams can jettison a hold in seconds if you grabbed the wrong pile. Do not vent sentient cargo as a joke unless you enjoy the note Hello Games wrote about that.

Outposts, bio-wrecks, and belts

Space outposts sit in inhabited systems. Trade with the quartermaster, buy maps, and take salvage or recovery contracts from the delivery terminal. Standing and units both move here, so it pairs with the units and nanites loop.

Infested outposts (bio-wrecks) are the same idea wrapped in spreading biological goop. Official notes call out Pathogen Sacs and Gelatinous Fibres. Clear with the Coil, bag the horror samples, and do not treat it like a normal depot. The Living Ship from Starbirth can patrol these sites if you are still on that mission.

Asteroid belts and ice fields hold crystals, comet dust, and traffic: miners, traders, pirates. Some asteroids are large enough to land on and build. Those platforms are the easy on-ramp to orbital construction if a fully free-floating base feels like too much wire.

Orbital bases and owning a station

Deploy a deep-space base computer and claim a volume anywhere in space. Modular parts snap into a floating habitat, restaurant, checkpoint, or ugly cube with a telescope. This is the feature base-builders asked for when planetary terrain fights the footprint. See base building for part unlocks; Cosmos adds corridor pieces and a pile of station cosmetics at the Anomaly Construction Research Terminal.

You can also buy and direct a space station. Prove yourself to local authorities — salvage contracts at Deep Space Outposts are the usual proof — then decorate the interior lobby, add ancillary rooms, and dress the exterior flight path. The step-by-step lives on space stations. Hello Games framed this as a clubhouse: friends visit a station that looks like your group, not a clone of every other terminus. Rare exterior modules drop from deep-space anomalies as well as research.

Alliances

Station directors can found an alliance: name, banner, networked stations. Other players join by visiting an owned station. You may sit in up to three alliances. Teleporters list alliance systems. Leaderboards at the station core rank groups by population, activity, and claimed space. This is the social layer on top of multiplayer, not a replacement for Nexus missions.

Spacewalk for every ship

Voyagers let corvette crews EVA. Cosmos puts an eject control on the Quick Menu for all starships and deepens six-degrees-of-freedom movement, including roll. Cold protection drains in open space unless you are next to another hazard (a star counts). Explosions shove you. Landing on a hulk or asteroid has a real gravity transition. Bring a jetpack plan.

Expedition 23: Our Journey Continues

The anniversary expedition runs about six weeks. Each milestone is one of the 40 named updates from launch to Cosmos — a playable museum. Sean Murray reads developer commentary per milestone; once unlocked, those notes stay in the Collected Knowledge section of the Catalogue.

Rewards Hello Games listed:

  • Golden Rasamama S36 (golden classic starter ship)
  • Vintage Sentinel Interceptor rebuilt from pre-release footage
  • Starbound v0.27 multi-tool from early concept art
  • Diplodocus companion, retextured from old trailer footage
  • Astronaut bobblehead for the cockpit
  • Framed commemorative art using update book-cover images
  • Decals and titles

Start it from the Expedition Terminus on the Anomaly. Practical routing lives in the expeditions guide. If the Terminus still lists Swarm, the anniversary season has not flipped on yet — Hello Games staged it separately from 7.0. Check New Game for a Community Expedition tile after you are on Cosmos. Do not wait until the last weekend if you want the diplo and the golden Rasamama on your main save.

Patch 7.01 (10 September 2026)

Steam received hotfix 7.01 the day after launch; other platforms followed as builds cleared. It is a play-loop patch, not a content drop. Station directors: Korvax interiors no longer eat decoration, stairs keep their colour, you are less likely to fall through the concourse, and some exterior modules now unlock from salvaged materials instead of a stuck research purchase. Claim Station UI and same-station race conditions are clearer. Alliance names show on the teleporter and the star system map.

Salvage crews: Vent Cargo on the tractor beam works again, hulk meltdown messaging is readable, both Travellers in a co-op hulk or infested outpost can claim the rare drops, and Pathogen Sac / Viral Heart icons no longer swap. Outposts gained a Galactic Trade Terminal in the Quartermaster room. The star system map now prints the current galaxy, keeps some completed objects so you can revisit, and matches planet markers to the Discoveries page.

Creative mode can no longer fly inside the sun. Asteroid fields spawn fewer pirate/trader piles. Frigate grey cubes, docked corvettes that take off after a reload at an outpost, and a PS5-on-PS4 hang are in the same notes. Official post: nomanssky.com/2026/09/cosmos-7-01. How-to pages: space stations and space hulks.

How to play the patch this week

  1. Reach the Anomaly if this save never has, so the map populates.
  2. Open the star system map, mark an outpost, then a hulk.
  3. If you own a corvette, install a Tractor Beam at the Corvette Workshop. If you do not, Voyagers is the missing lesson.
  4. Salvage conservatively. Leave when integrity warnings stack.
  5. Process at the outpost. Spend the first profits on station cosmetics or hyperdrive range, not a third paint job.
  6. Peek at alliance boards only after you can keep a station looking finished. Empty clubhouses do not recruit.

Read Patch History if Expedition 23 names updates you never played, and keep the Updates Hub for Voyagers plus future 7.0x notes. For a clean first-hour route on a new save, use Getting Started. Cosmos is the destination those ten years of free patches were pointing at: space you can work, not just cross.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.

How do I open the star system map?

Use the Quick Menu after the save has visited the Space Anomaly. The Signals tutorial mission introduces marking planets and deep-space points of interest.

Do I need a corvette to salvage hulks?

You can spacewalk and pull parts with the Gravitino Coil from any ship. A corvette Tractor Beam is what hauls physical salvage into a hold. Fighters can still scan, fight, and land on large asteroids.

Can I really fly into the sun?

Yes. Cosmos places a point of interest at the system's star. The flight is long, bright, and lethal. Hello Games patched Creative mode flying *inside* the sun in 7.01 because people immediately tried.

How do I own a space station?

Prove yourself to the local authorities to become director. You then decorate interior and exterior, add rooms, and can found an alliance from that station. Station cosmetics and extra rooms are covered in base building.

What does Expedition 23 give you?

Our Journey Continues pays a Golden Rasamama S36, vintage Interceptor, Starbound v0.27 multi-tool, diplodocus companion, astronaut bobblehead, framed art, decals, and titles, plus Sean Murray commentary in the Catalogue.

Is Cosmos on Nintendo Switch and VR?

Yes. Hello Games listed PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X/S, Switch 1, Switch 2, Mac, PSVR 1 and 2, PC VR, and Game Pass. It is a free title update, not a separate SKU.

What did patch 7.01 change?

Steam received 7.01 on 10 September 2026. It fixes station decoration, tractor Vent Cargo, hulk rare-loot sharing in co-op, Claim Station races, and star-map revisit markers. Details are in the 7.01 section above and in the space stations and space hulks guides.
