No Man's Sky Freighters, Frigates, and Fleet Expeditions

Claim the first rescue hull for free, hunt S-class in rich stars, and staff a fleet that is not a Corvette or a Cosmos station.

Freighters Guide

A freighter is the capital ship you live in when a Corvette is too small and a space station will not warp. Hello Games has been iterating that fantasy since the years after the 12 August 2016 launch; Endurance rebuilt the interiors, later patches added organic frigates and pirate dreadnoughts, and Cosmos 7.0 (9 September 2026) did not replace any of it. Owned space stations are clubhouses. Corvettes are Voyagers workshop hulls. Freighters remain the movable warehouse with a fleet.

This page is how you get the first hull for free, when battles spawn, how to hunt S-class, and how frigates actually make money. Pair it with the ship tier list for starship rankings — freighter class is a separate roll. If you still cannot leave the crash site, finish Getting Started before you sit through a pirate wave.

The pirate rescue, then the timer

The first time a pirate attack hits a civilian freighter in space, you can destroy the pirates and then board the capital ship. The captain will offer the hull. That first rescue can be free. Take it. Even a C-class with ugly slots is a teleport pin, a storage grid, and a fleet board you did not pay for. Upgrading later is cheaper than refusing the gift because the silhouette is wrong.

After that, battles are gated. The typical rhythm players still use is about three hours of play plus five warps before another freighter encounter is eligible. Warp into a system, look for the capital-ship fight, win it, land, and talk to the captain if you want to buy. If you do not like the class or the layout, leave. The next eligible fight is another timer, not a reload ritual you should build a personality around.

S-class freighters spawn more often in wealthy systems. Economy icons on the galaxy map matter. Pirate systems and poor stars waste the five-warp clock. System wealth does not guarantee S; it raises the ceiling. If you are hunting, stack warps in three-star economies and ignore pretty dead systems. Keep a stack of Warp Cells and a Hyperdrive that can actually reach those stars; the resource list is there when fuel recipes get cryptic.

Pirate dreadnoughts are the Outlaws-era variant: you fight a pirate capital, disable it, and can claim a pirate-style freighter instead of a corporate one. The combat is spicier. The inventory rules are the same idea — class, slots, and whether you actually want that silhouette as a living room. Combat upgrades on the freighter matter if you farm dreadnoughts. They do not matter if you only send trade frigates and teleport.

Summon the owned freighter from the Quick Menu once it is yours. The controls page covers that menu if the summon bind is still a mystery. Park it above a planet, teleport to it from stations and bases, and treat the hangar as extra starship storage. Online co-op, Cross-Play, and Cross-Save all work on the deck. Friends can visit. It is not a couch battleship.

Frigates, organic hulls, and fleet expeditions

A fleet is five specialist flavours:

  1. Combat frigates — they like pirate and threat missions.
  2. Exploration — scan and range missions.
  3. Industrial — mining and extraction missions.
  4. Trade — commerce missions.
  5. Support — the glue that reduces damage and fuel drama on mixed fleets.

Buy them from civilian freighters you meet in space, or recruit as the game offers. Feed them fuel. Repair dents after bad expeditions. A damaged frigate you ignore becomes a wreck you paid for. Mix types to match the mission card; over-tier a combat fleet into an industrial job and they come home bruised.

Organic frigates (living fleet ships) come from a different loop: pulsing through space until an anomaly creature is scanned and invited, not bought from a Gek clerk. They join the same expedition board. They look like Living Ships that decided to be a crew. Treat them as a collection and a specialist, not as a replacement for a full five-type roster. Korvax and Vy’keen captains will still sell you steel; the organic ones arrive as wildlife.

Fleet expeditions are the point. From the freighter bridge you send groups on timed missions. Match the mission type to the specialist. Success pays Units, Nanites, and materials that feed units and nanites without you standing on a planet. These expeditions are not community Expeditions — the seasonal Anomaly campaigns with milestones and a Golden Rasamama. Same English word, different button. Do not start Expedition 23 from the fleet table.

Build storage rooms on the freighter so the warehouse is real. The numbered containers share with planetary bases. A teleporter on the deck closes the loop. You can farm, warp, and never lose the pin. Hangar slots hold the daily-driver starships ranked on the tier list; the freighter itself is not a Fighter with extra zeros.

Do not confuse the three homes

After Cosmos, Travellers own three different big things in space:

You want all three on a long save. You do not need all three this week. New Travellers should take the free pirate-rescue freighter the moment it appears, then go back to scanners. Veterans hunting S-class should do it in wealthy systems on the three-hour-plus-five-warp clock, not in a hulk field and not during a station-claim session. Hotfix 7.01 (Steam 10 September 2026, rolling elsewhere) rewrote station claims, hulk warnings, and outpost trade terminals. It did not rewrite freighter spawning. If a fight did not appear, wait the timer and warp — do not blame Cosmos.

Multiplayer covers friends on the deck and alliance visits that start from a station, not from the freighter hangar. Autophage standing will not spawn you a better capital ship; wealth on the galaxy map will. Put Nanites into starship and Multi-Tool tech first; a prettier bridge can wait. The Guides Hub still lists this as a mid-game luxury.

A C-class gift freighter with two exploration frigates and a teleporter will carry a Normal save through Expedition 23. An S-class hunt is a hobby with a star map. Do the hobby when the Coil and the station claim are not on fire. Summon the hull from the Quick Menu, send the fleet, and go fly the Corvette at a hulk — the warehouse does not need you standing on the bridge while the timers run.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.

Can the first freighter be free?

Yes. The first pirate-rescue civilian freighter can be claimed at no cost. Take it even if the class is poor; you can hunt a better hull later in wealthy systems.

When do more freighter battles spawn?

The usual gate is about three hours of play plus five warps after the last encounter. Warp into a system and look for the capital-ship fight. If nothing appears, wait the timer rather than blaming Cosmos.

Where should I hunt S-class freighters?

Wealthy systems raise the odds. Stack the three-hour-plus-five-warp clock in three-star economies. Pirate dreadnoughts are a separate combat variant with the same class roll idea.

How many frigate types are there?

Five specialists: combat, exploration, industrial, trade, and support. Organic frigates join the same board from space anomalies. Match the team to the mission card on the fleet table.

Are fleet expeditions the same as community Expeditions?

No. Fleet expeditions are timed frigate jobs from your freighter. Seasonal campaigns such as Expedition 23 start from the Anomaly terminus; see expeditions.

How is a freighter different from a Corvette or owned station?

Freighters summon from the Quick Menu and carry frigates. Corvettes are Voyagers workshop ships with a tractor beam for hulks. Owned stations stay in-system as alliance clubhouses.
