No Man's Sky Cross-Play, Nexus, and Cosmos alliances
Online co-op on every platform Hello Games ships, with privacy sliders, crew missions, and how to shut griefers out.
No Man’s Sky is a single-player crash landing that happens to contain a full online co-op layer. There is no split-screen. There is Cross-Play and Cross-Save across PC (Steam, GOG, Game Pass), PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Mac, PSVR 1 and 2, PC VR, and Steam Deck. Friends do not need matching storefronts. They need a Friend Code, matching privacy settings, and the patience to wait for a planet to stream in.
This page is the social layer on top of Getting Started. The gunplay and the base parts do not change because someone else landed. The stakes do: a stranger can flatten a cuboid room, steal a pad, or, more often, drop a gift stack of Activated Indium at your feet and vanish.
Cross-Play and Cross-Save
Cross-Play is on by default in Normal multiplayer. You will see other Travellers in the Anomaly, in Nexus missions, and in systems where you have not hidden the population. VR can group with flat screens. A Deck can group with a PS5. A Switch 2 can group with a Game Pass PC. Voice chat is inconsistent on some handheld builds — use a party app if the in-game mic is missing.
Cross-Save is the cloud slot system at cloud.nomanssky.com. Link Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or Mac accounts, then upload up to five saves. Download on the other device from the Cross-Save Manager on the save select screen. Huge bases take time to sync; do not pull a 1,200-hour file onto a handheld in a hurry and then panic when the first load is slow. Upload after a session so the cloud copy is the one you think it is.
Permadeath and some Custom sliders can restrict who you match with. If a friend cannot join, compare difficulty presets before you blame NAT. Abandoned mode is a lonelier ruleset by design; you can still invite, but the universe will not populate itself with NPC traffic to make the lobby feel busy.
Nexus missions and the Anomaly lobby
The Space Anomaly is the matchmaking floor. Walk onto the Nexus, pick a mission, and the game groups you with whoever else queued. Combat, scanning, feeding, and building missions all pay Quicksilver plus Units and Nanites. That is the only legitimate Quicksilver path. There is no microtransaction shop. Spend it on capes, trailers, and staffs at the Synthesis Companion.
Nexus missions are also the easiest way to meet people without a Friend Code. They are not the safest way to show off an unshielded base. Do the mission, take the Quicksilver, go home. If you enjoy the group, send a friend request and continue in a private session.
Iteration vendors, expedition terminus, and the Quicksilver companion all sit in the same lobby. You will see golden trailers from Travellers who have been here since 2016. You will also see new crash-site suits. Be kind in the text chat. The Anomaly is a museum and a bus station.
Corvette crews and Cosmos alliances
Corvettes added walkable interiors and crew missions. Friends can stand in your hab, man a turret, and take a contract that is not a Nexus card. This is the best co-op the game has ever shipped for people who actually want to fly together instead of blinking to a waypoint. Park the Corvette, let them board, then pulse as a tiny fleet. The Cosmos tractor beam even makes salvage a group sport: one player on the Gravitino Coil, one on the beam, one watching the hulk’s meltdown timer.
Alliances arrived with Cosmos 7.0. Station directors can ally, claim territory, and plant flags on the star system map. Treat an alliance like a club, not a kingdom. The game is still a sandbox with 18 quintillion planets; you are not going to occupy a galaxy. You can occupy a belt, a hulk field, and a station concourse, and that is enough. If a director starts running the club like a tax office, leave. There will be another station.
Faction flavour still matters for NPC standing even when you are grouped. A Vy’keen system does not care that your alliance is named after a Gek joke. Keep Korvax, Vy’keen, and Autophage standing in mind if the group is doing language or staff unlocks between crew jobs.
Privacy settings and griefing
The Options menu holds the important sliders: multiplayer on or off, whether other players can edit your terrain and base parts, whether PvP damage is allowed, and whether you appear in the Anomaly crowd. For a first base, turn off base editing by strangers. For a first Corvette, assume anyone you did not invite is a tourist, not a co-author. PvP is entertaining in a pirate system and miserable when you are photographing a diplodocus.
Griefing in No Man’s Sky is usually petty rather than systemic: a message, a minigun, a cube built in a doorway. Report through the platform if someone is actually abusive. Otherwise, leave the group, set the session to Friends Only or Solo, and restore the part. Uploaded bases can be reported if they are using the platform as a billboard. Your own base-building habit should include a teleporter inside a room you control so you can land even if the pad is grief-blocked.
Do not leave your save public while you are AFK in a refiners room. Do not accept random join requests during Permadeath. Do not assume a golden trailer is a mentor; sometimes it is a Traveller who wants an audience for a jetpack dance. That is still co-op, in a sense.
Expedition 23 is a good season to play with a friend because the museum walk is long and the commentary is better when someone else hears Sean Murray talk about 2018. Use the terminus on one save, invite the other Traveller, and do not skip milestones just because one of you has already seen the feature. Details sit on the expeditions page.
Official patch notes, platform support, and community hangouts are collected on Links and Updates. The Guides Hub remains the single-player map. Multiplayer is optional on purpose. Turn it off when you want the original 2016 feeling of a planet that is only yours. Turn it on when the Corvette has spare chairs. Either way, the Pulse Engine still needs fuel, the visor still pays Units and Nanites, and nobody on any platform can buy currency with a credit card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers Travellers search for after Cosmos.
Is No Man's Sky split-screen?
No. Multiplayer is online co-op. Two people on one couch need two copies and two screens, or one player watching. Cross-Play covers the platforms listed above.
How does Cross-Save work?
Link accounts at Hello Games' Cross-Save site, upload up to five saves, and download them from the in-game Cross-Save Manager. Use it to move a PC file to a Deck or a PS5 file to Xbox. Large bases sync slowly.
Where do I play with randoms?
The Nexus on the Space Anomaly. Queue a mission for Quicksilver. For a planned session, exchange Friend Codes and set privacy to Friends. Controls covers the Quick Menu summon for the Anomaly.
What are Cosmos alliances?
Clubs built around player-owned stations and claimed space after Cosmos 7.0. They are optional. Read Cosmos for the systems, then treat the alliance as a shared lobby rather than a conquest sim.
How do I stop people editing my base?
Disable base editing and PvP in Options, and prefer Friends Only when you are building. Keep a teleporter in a closed room. Restore parts if someone griefs a pad. See base building.
Can Switch and VR players join my Corvette?
Yes, if their edition supports online co-op. Switch 2, PSVR 2, and PC VR all Cross-Play with flat PC and consoles. Crew missions are on the Corvette page. Handhelds may need a party-app mic.
